Our building, as intelligent as our software platform

Within twenty years, a software forge with 30 employees has developed into a global company with 19 subsidiaries   from South Korea to the USA. Today, more than 200 people work at our Salzburg Headquarters. This inevitably leads to an increased need for space. We are meeting this need with a new company building within walking distance of the main building. It accommodates up to 120 employees. Our guiding vision was to create a place where people enjoy coming together. Staff enjoy a panoramic roof terrace, a communal kitchen with access to the garden terrace, tea kitchens and spacious lounge areas with enough space for informal exchanges between colleagues. Sustainability was an important factor in the development of the site right from the start.

We placed particular emphasis on the involvement of local partners. For example, we rely on 100 percent green electricity, externally sourced from hydropower from Salzburg AG. In addition, energy is generated from a powerful PV system at the site. The challenge of managing peak loads and energy storage is intelligently solved with our zenon software platform. It controls the building's energy management and optimizes the loading of the electric vehicle fleet. Digital infrastructure and air conditioning technology are operated in an energy-saving manner. Lighting and shading are also controlled by the software. This ensures the careful use of resources. The building data is shared with Salzburg's universities for research purposes. In this way, the challenges of the day after tomorrow can be addressed today.

Ventilated metal facade

Ventilated metal facade

A ventilated facade creates an air gap between the building insulation and the facade cladding. This gap is open at the top and bottom.

The facade is "self-breathing". In addition to keeping out the elements, it creates a healthy and cooler indoor climate. It reduces direct solar radiation on the building which would warm up the walls. Thanks to the constant air flow in the cavity, the facade construction aids cooling.

Ground Source Heat Pump

A ground source heat pump contributes to the heating and cooling of the building. This is an energy efficient system with a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional methods of heating and cooling. Deep drilling was required for the 15 deep probes, each of which extend to a depth of 100 metres.

Energy data management

zenon controls the energy management of the building, so the allocation of electricity is coordinated according to urgency. Priority is always given to the digital infrastructure and air conditioning technology, with optional loads such as the electric vehicles coming last.

Energy data management is the challenge of the future for all companies that want to secure an independent energy supply and keep an eye on their consumption.


Concrete core activation

Concrete core activation

Heating and cooling pipes are laid directly in the concrete of the floors and ceilings. These act as heating or cooling surfaces and, due to their size, manage with very low supply temperatures. No expensive and energy-consuming air conditioning is required for cooling. Concrete core activation also allows heat to be stored very well. This means that heat and cold can be temporarily stored and released at different times.

The building's onsite photovoltaic (PV) plant currently covers about 70% of consumption (of course, this varies depending on demand). There are two batteries that store the energy generated from solar and charge the UPS that supplies the servers in the event of a power failure. The saved CO2 value and much more can be viewed via a web app.

The building's shades and shutters are electronically operated so that the light and shading are controlled with zenon. Cooling in summer plays just as important a role as heating in winter. The building data is shared with Salzburg's universities for research purposes.

Energy recovery from ventilation system

An exhaust air heat pump transfers heat from the ventilation system. Heat recovery is particularly important in winter when the ventilation system removes the heated air from the rooms. Heat from the spent air is returned to the incoming air so that the air is fresh and energy is not wasted by being warm air being blown out of the building to warm the external air.

No need for an emergency diesel generator

No need for an emergency diesel generator

The need for an emergency diesel generator onsite has been avoided due to onsite battery storage (BESS). In the event of a blackout, a system in the server room ensures a continuous power supply to essential infrastructure. This power supply is made possible by the UPS system and the inhouse PV system with battery storage.

Central aeration and ventilation via ventilation ducts

Central ventilation is carried out via ventilation ducts in the office ceilings which ensure a tempered and filtered air exchange (approx. 2 times/hour). This is especially important for allergy sufferers.

Giving a piece back to nature

We need nature to live so it is natural for us to give something back. By planting the COPA-DATA forest, we are strengthening local ecosystems for the long term and making an essential contribution to protecting biodiversity. Above all, it is about combating climate change. Every single tree stores CO2 in the course of its life and many trees store a lot of CO2. That benefits the entire planet.

Not only good for nature...

By planting trees, we not only support nature, we also help small farmers to finance the livelihood of their families. The farmers can manage the trees independently. This way, the local people benefit economically from the trees. They diversify their income, increase their productivity in the long term and can even set up micro-enterprises. This creates the financial basis to bring social benefits to local communities.
